But why not pass in the node as the parameter rather than the name of
the node, which would make things a lot simper.
That is, rather than
<xsl:with-param name="node" select="'desc'"/>
....
<xsl:value-of select=".//*[local-name()=$node]"/>
do
<xsl:with-param name="node" select=".//desc"/>
....
<xsl:value-of select="$node"/>
