Thank you for your verbose reply, which clarified a lot to me.
The problem is that we process SGML data with some entities, including &, and we want these entities to be converted to the '&entity;' form which ends up in the database where it is served to unsuspecting webbrowsers.
Since we have full control over the SGML to XML conversion, this might be a more reasonable place to attack this problem. I currently use 'sx' from James Clarks "SP" package -- is anyone familiar enough with this tool to give me a hint regarding how to do it there?
