i can't find mention of bash or its versions anywhere in the source (using 
`git grep -i bash`).  the INSTALL and manual/install.texi def do not mention 
it.  i could add a section saying "you need bash-2 or newer", but would that 
really be useful ?  considering we require gcc-4.4 or newer, seems like it 
would be more noise for people.

certainly if we wanted to require bash-3 or newer, a section would be 
warranted.  but bash-2.0 was released over a decade ago :).
