Wow! Talk about a blast from the past!
Thanks for following up on this -- I had (unsurprisingly) quite
forgotten about it, not least due to not having any systems capable of
using vm86() at all anymore.

I tried that first, but this seemed ever so much simpler and less
likely for a neophyte like me to get wrong.
(As an aside, I have patches for full compilation of all of glibc bar
ld.so with -fstack-protector-all which I can update for glibc trunk if
you wish. They have found one bug in glibc itself -- since fixed -- but
that didn't stop them being rejected without comment the one and only
time I tried to submit them, years ago. In keeping with the new spirit
of glasnost I can resubmit if you wish.)
