I don't use anything but bash.  In case somebody wants a change s/he
better does it right and does not add yet another lame workaround.  The
fact that existing scripts don't mean it is the prefer or correct way.
It just means nobody cared.  If you want to see it working right,
implement it accordingly.  Maybe all this means using printf instead of
echo.  Just do it right if you care or don't do it at all.
