Yeah, I get the same problems with gcc-3.0.1(CVS+subreg-byte patch).
Dave has expressed interest in fixing the thread problems, although I
don't see him getting the time to do it any where in the near future :)

So for completeness, I've got it built under (with compilers)

sparc-linux (gcc-2.95.4+dso_handle)
sparc64-linux (gcc-3.0.1+subreg-byte)
i386-linux (gcc-2.95.4+dso_handle)
