Exactly. In fact, if you are using yum to update one of the major
rpm-based distros, you can almost certainly do a "yum install gsl\*" and
get it. If you can't do this right out of the box, there are lots of
yum-ready sites and mirrors that have it. Duke among others -- look on
mirror.dulug.duke.edu or install.dulug.duke.edu, for example (has
high-level centos and FC mirrors)
