Cooperation and cross-platform work seem to be pretty important for a basic project like glibc.
Though he may be a dedicated developer, it's possible that Ulrich Drepper is now an inappropriate
maintainer.
He has no interest in minority platforms. Glibc is remarkable for its use with many CPU
architectures, compilers, and kernels, but proper support requires further work. This lack of
interest implies a lack of competency, and Uli may break if things change too quickly.
He has a very low and very public opinion about people whom he's not being paid by Red Hat to
support. While I understand not having time to support minority systems, his policy of publicly
discouraging others from "wasting" his time with their trivial concerns, such as concerns about his
conduct, implies that their efforts would not be welcome. Everybody is a newbie at one time, and
an ability to turn challenging newbies into valuable contributors is essential for the future of a
project this size.
Therefore, Uli is not appropriate as a maintainer. He should be replaced by a more people-oriented
person, so he doesn't have to interact with humans and inflame opinions with his policy
statements. As he continues to work, it should be clear that he's limited to commercially
interesting activities. At the least, he should prepare lieutenants to handle others' special needs, so
that specific solutions could possibly be found to make glibc more correct or pretty.
Taking time out of coding to support people is not a waste. Making it difficult for people to
contribute is a waste.
