fyi, using a current gdb, and gdb from the 5.1 branch i see this.
$ ./gdb/gdb ~/tmp/a.out
GNU gdb 2001-08-30-cvs (MI_OUT)

This GDB was configured as "powerpc-apple-netbsd1.5X"...

5.0 is to old to be worth worrying about.
