This was fixed at some point.
Now it does what I would expect:
(gdb) p temp
$1 = (unsigned int &) @0xbffff6e4: 0
(gdb) p/x temp
$2 = (unsigned int &) @0xbffff6e4: 0x0
(gdb) p /t temp
$3 = (unsigned int &) @0xbffff6e4: 0
