[RFA] pull AVR port into gdb-5.2 branch

Howdy,

I'd like to apply the attached patch to the gdb-5.2 branch. This is just 
pulling the AVR port from the main trunk.

Is there anything special that I should do instead of applying this patch
and then committing the changes to the branch?  I looked through the cvs
info manual, but it only talks about merging branches onto the main line.  
It didn't seem obvious to me how to go from main line to branch.

Once this patch goes in, I'll make the changes to MAINTAINERS and NEWS on 
the 5.2 branch separately.
