To turn off the display of the page number in the preface, you need to
customize the footer.content template to add a xsl:when clause for preface.
See this doc for examples:
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/PrintHeaders.html#PrintHeadersText
It's possible to change the page numbering sequences, but currently you
would have to customize both the chapter and preface templates. You need to
change the initial-page-number property to be "1" in preface, and to be
"auto-odd" in chapter, including the first chapter. If you are doing
single-sided output, then it should be "auto" instead.
In the next release of the XSL stylesheets (real soon), a new template
generates the value of the initial-page-number property for page-sequences.
It will be a lot easier to customize the numbering sequences then.

Subject: [docbook-apps] No preface numbering
Hello
I'd like to stop preface numbrering, and having the first chapter
numbrered from the very start.
IE, I have a 6 page preface, I do not want it numbered, but I want the
first chapter numbered 7.
Is it possible?
Thanks
