Maybe with an attribute called "audience" or something?

Well, you could use the 'condition' attribute, which is pretty general.

So I can do condition="presentation." Then I might add an additional attribute for "audience"? Is there any problems doing this?

The concrete example is this:

I am working on a book. From the book, I will draw academic talks. However, I will also be teaching a course that will present much of the content in the book. So, I'm hoping for an elegant way to have a single source, for multiple presentation media (print and presentation slides) and audiences (scholars vs. students).
