Sorry, just a typo - I was refering to the common attribute "xreflabel" 
that I've added to stuff like <chapter> & <section>

My Parser tends to chuck out loads of noise - My aim is to get just a nice 
little list of <xref>s that don't point anywhere that I could refer to 
when editing. My source docs are 600+ page files that are littered with 
xrefs...

I'll take a look at Schematron - thanks.

There's no xreflabel element, so I'm not sure what you mean. If you
just want to make sure all the links are valid, a validating parser
will test that every 'linkend' points to an 'id'.

If you want xrefs to only point to certain classes of elements, check
out Schematron.
