Regarding the native gcc, as usual, you are indeed correct.

Re the wirespeed distro, Most apps do build with uClibc, but some: mount,
and others still use a glibc flavor.

Uh, don't you want to use uclibc with uclinux?  Regardless of that, the
cause 
of your immediate problem is that you are not setting CC when configuring 
glibc, so it tries to use your native compiler.
