I don't think newlib supports a powerpc-linux target at this time.

However, you might prefer to target powerpc-eabi.  I don't know if
you'll get full functionality, but I know that at least short programs
using printf() targetted at powerpc-eabi do work on ppclinux (I run
'make check' in gcc on my ppclinux machine natively for powerpc-eabi).
