Thanks for the link I'll check it over and get back to you very soon.  
Meanwhile I found some really useful advise on Dave Pawson's site as below 
which I'm sure is just as good for XHTML as for XSL-FO, links are...

There is also mention of Docbook on source forge which Dave mentions and I 
am hoping it could be a useful start also.
