I'm sure it's something obvious, but can anyone point me in the right direction?

I just did a fresh checkout and it compiled fine for me. My best guess is a corrupted cvs checkout (or perhaps a full disk). I'd do a "cvs -nq up" to see if cvs thinks any of your files are modified.

(Also, don't build as root. You need to *install* as root, but there isn't any need to *build* as root.)
