automake question

Hi,
I'm trying to add a file in libm/math. I've added the file to Makefile.am,
but when I run "automake" in libm/math to generate Makefile.in, I get
$ automake
automake: `configure.ac' or `configure.in' is required
$
How do I generate Makefile.in?
