Is it issuing A and AAAA requests at the same time?
No, only A requests (I have mostly disabled IPv6, as I don't have such
connectivity). I also tried with MX and it also produced 8 request.

Yes.
and does the resolver have to go through some redirection?
No. Actually, my approach for testing the retries was to disconnect the
router, thus forcing a timeout failure.
The only difference I see in the 8 datagrams is the source port.
