Thanks.  The patch is pretty mechanical and it's well-established that we 
want to make this cleanup; I've now committed it.  Feel free to work on 
further cleanups such as the suggested building .os files to get automatic 
-fPIC usage; I've no immediate plans for further development on this 
issue.
