   Thanks for the explanation.  I was aware that ja_JP.ujis is a "Linux
   invention".

This may be academic, but ja_JP.ujis is not a Linux invention.  It
appeared as early as 1990 in the X distribution, which was contributed
by Li Yuhong and Hiroshi Kuribayashi of Omron.  (We used to have an
Omron workstation here at Twin Sun.)  E.g. see:

Some commercial products use ja_JP.ujis.  E.g. see Informix's
