I don't remember how much FPU the ELCs had. Probably a problem with
the FPU emulation.

Strange. You'd have to look through this. The program will only
terminate if barriers work perfectly. Since people reported success
with modern SPARCs with have compare and set instructions I guess it's
a problem in this code.

This one does not terminate if the linker is broken in the handling of
.hidden and .protected. I don't think that any system specific code
is involved in this.
