The problem is with your background thread; you need another pair of brackets. It makes a lambda, but does not execute it, then the thread is complete and finishes. You need to do (begin-thread ((make-looper "background"))) begin-thread is analagous to begin; it is not like say map or for-each which execute a procedure argument.
