In gdb build dir, add the following line into testsuite/site.exp

  set GDBFLAGS "-ex \"set target-async on\""

make check RUNTESTFLAGS="--target_board=native-gdbserver"

or you can set GDBFLAGS in your own board file other than testuite/site.exp.
