To complement David's answer, I dare add one more piece between
XML and PDF:
DBMS -> XML -> XSL FO+SVG -> PDF
Ability to generate graphics on the fly is a nice feature of XSLFO-based
workflow; it can hardly be maintained when going through DocBook.
