Well, I could find no reference to the label attribute
in the footnote templates, so it looks like that has
not been implemented yet. You could file a feature
request on the DocBook SourceForge tracker.
In the meantime, you could set the stylesheet parameter
footnote.number.format="a" to get footnotes that
are numbered with lowercase letters. That way you
don't need to maintain the labels.
