Since when exactly do we care about 3PPs here? :-) Doesn't sound like
much of a reason not to have -shared-libgcc the default for gcc as well
(unless, of course, -static is specified, as you did with the other
languages). Would you consider changing this for -3?

No, it just seems to ignore it entirely. The only way I've found so far
is to define CC="gcc-4 -shared-libgcc" for configure. Not pretty. :-(
