Almost all of those connections will be to AVG (though thunderbird will
not be aware of that).

I disabled AVG's "E-Mail Scanner" but I still cannot connect.


In the user variables or system variables? (System Properties, Advanced,
Environment Variables)

The user variable path. I just added it to the system variable Path but that did not fix the problem.
