Re: redefining $HOME

Gustavo Seabra wrote:
Hi all,

I was wondering if it is possible to use the windows folder "My Documents" or even "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME" (or some dir inside those) as the hoe directory in Cygwin. I though about substituting the user directory inside /home by a symlink to one of the above. Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Is there a better way to do it?

The reason I am thinking about it is just practical: I want to have all my files (Windows or Cygwin) under one root.

If you would prefer to have all the Windows "cruft" that it stores under
"Documents and Settings" or any other directory, you can certainly use it
instead. Symbolic links, mounts, or a change to your '/etc/passwd' file
to point to your new home will all work. You should be aware that there
are scripts "out there" that still trip over spaces in directory and file
names, so that may be a reason to prefer links/mounts over editing the
passwd file, unless you plan to alter the Windows path you're going to
point to.
