I had not trouble building putty-0.58-cygterm-20060525.tar.gz

you do need to do:
	install -s path-to.../cthelper/cthelper.exe /usr/local/bin
	install -s path-to /utty.exe     /usr/local/bin
for cygwin based system.

See if you /bin/ld program is there.  You'll need it if you want to
build programs
