FWIW I tried renaming the magic* files below /usr/share/file,
and then copied in those from the linux box. This throughly "broke"
"file", so I reverted. I also spent a few min in the file and magic
man pages, and suspect, given enough time it may be possible for an end user
like me to fix this. I suspect this is OT for the list, so if I pursue this
further I will post to another more appropriate (UNIX/usenet) group.
