  Most likely it's because you have lots of unix-tools in your $PATH setting
ahead of the cygwin ones, and they aren't compatible, and something is
crashing as a result.

  There's no way the bash startup scripts are going to work correctly when all
those commands are over-ridden by non-cygwin versions.
