                 BACK UP YOUR HARD DRIVE ***NOW***





  Ok, it is most likely to just be the CPU fan; and if the fan is failing or
has somehow got stuck, that would cause the CPU to overheat, and all sorts
of strange symptoms might result.  But it could be your HD motor/spindle
packing in, and I can't tell from here!  Don't take any chances.  Don't run
the risk of losing all your work.  Time to follow your routine backup
procedure (you do have a routine backup procedure, don't you?) just to be
safe and then maybe take a look inside the case and see if you can tell
where the noise is coming from.
