Forwarding this email exchange from the coreutils list for archival
purposes, in case any one else has similar problems.  I personally cannot
reproduce it (I don't use the Norton tool mentioned).  Could it be that
Norton Protection Recycle Bin interferes is interfering with the unlink()
call used in the rm command?

Thnaks for your time and patience.  After carefully comparing my desktop
against my laptop, I have observed that disabling "Norton Protection Recycle
Bin" on drive C: eliminated all the problems I have encountered.
