From the gnu getopt(3) man page (mysteriously missing in cygwin):
#include <unistd.h>
int getopt(int argc, char * const argv[], const char *optstring);
extern char *optarg; extern int optind, opterr, optopt;
If one does this with the latest cygwin, ugly linker messages result.
