Postinstall failure

- Subject: Postinstall failure
I searched don't hit me!
The problem is that the postinstall scripts fail to execute properly and
leave me with a non-functional cygwin installation. ie: clicking the cygwin
shortcut leads to a "bash-2.05b$" prompt from which no commands work. System
is XP SP1. setup.exe is 2.340.2.5.
I located some discussions on the topic but none contained a workable
solution.

-- Deals with download corruption, undownloaded packages and so on. I can
verify that my downloads are complete and functional because they work on
other (win2k) systems.
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2003-08/msg01251.html
-- This one is similar. It deals with the user's failure to download the
fileutils package.

-- Also a download failure.
On my win2k box a full installation and an installation of only the stuff I
need works fine. They both work fine in c:\cygwin and in any different
directory. ALL these types of installations fail on the XP box.
Linked is a 97.9KB rar archive containing setup.log, setup.log.full,
cygcheck -svr and env.

Everything in /etc/postinstall has a .done extension.
/home, /etc/passwd and /etc/group were not generated.
I'd appreciate any and all assistance.
