If you find it too much bother to submit your idea through the proper 
channels and you think the actual implementation of the idea would be 
less work, perhaps that's the better way to go.  Implement it and send
the patch to the grep maintainers.  You don't have to join any list for
that and you get the benefit of immediate use of the facility you want.
Of course, if you're not a programmer, your only hope is to interest
someone else in making this change for you.  I agree that's likely to be
allot of work too, though I'd wager discussion of that subject is of topic
for this list.
