I've got a hunch.  On 1.7, could you try replacing your libxcb1 with the
following:

ftp://ftp.cygwinports.org/pub/cygwinports/release-2/X.Org/libxcb/libxcb1/libxcb1-1.1-3.tar.bz2

Does that help?
