Emacs always black/green, -bg -fg don't seem to work

Subject: Emacs always black/green, -bg -fg don't seem to work

Trying to get a white background with black letters, I used this command... emacs -bg white -fg black ...but I got the regular black/green display. I tried the long notation to the same result.

Anyone know sbout this?
