Mark,
On a side note, why don't you go to:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install the updates, one-by-one, or
as many as you can do at once (whatever you wish) and try to figure out if
any of the updates fixes your problem. The Windows Update site lists all
patches available, that have not been installed, for your specific version
of Windows.
