Thank-you for your help, Harold.
I did a search for cygwin1.dll and only found the one instance.
I then did the update as suggested. That solved the problem. The newer
version of bash must have something in it that fixes the problem. The
installation the I have is only about one month old so almost everything
else was up-to-date.
At any rate it now starts up just great. Thanks again. And keep up the good
work, to everyone that answers question and on the development team. You
have a great product.

Hans-Peter,
I thought that only happened with ancient versions of Cygwin, or when you
have multiple versions of cygwin1.dll on your system.
1. Search for and remove any extraneous versions of cygwin1.dll (e.g. those
not in c:\cygwin\bin).
2. Update Cygwin by running setup.exe from http://cygwin.com
Good luck, and please report your results to the list,
Harold
