In fact I was going to go one step farther and suggest that what really
needs to happen is for someone to actually install each of these (in
VMware probably since I'd personally never go near some of this crud)
and debug the issue to find out if there's any way Cygwin can work
around their brokenness.

However, I'm aware that asking for detailed and thorough debugging from
others on a mailing list is tantamount to asking for a pony.
