Btw., did you notice the mail on the cygwin list reporting the problems
mksh has using paths with two leading slashes?  If mksh folds two
slashes into one, then this is not POSIX compatible, see (*):

  "A pathname consisting of a single <slash> shall resolve to the root
   directory of the process. [...]  A pathname that begins with two
   successive <slash> characters may be interpreted in an implementation-
   defined manner, although more than two leading <slash> characters shall
   be treated as a single <slash> character."
