That sounds great to me as long as minimal is still easy to get. 
The thing that frustrated me most about the old setup was that as a
dial-up user I had to uncheck big stuff like TeX and postgreSQL or
restart a net-install from scratch (or leave it on all night). 
Perl and python aren't huge compared to *everything*, of course, but
I'll download perl if I want it, thank you very much.

And my personal opinion is that bash should stay in base. I write 
#!/bin/bash scripts a lot.
