i'm using gcc-4.6.1, glibc-2.14, and bison-2.5.  the failing code path looks 
something like:
	...
	#define yyerror         rx_error
	...
	        char const *yymsgp = YY_("syntax error");
	...
	        yyerror (yymsgp);
	...
