Where is 65816 CPU support?

I'm interested in NES vintage game development with GNU binutils.
But I am deeply disappointed with an entry I have found at gas/ChangeLog-2005:

2005-08-11  Alan Modra  <amodra@bigpond.net.au>
       ...
       * config/tc-w65.c: Delete.
       * config/tc-w65.h: Delete.
       ...

Why was 65816 dropped? Can it be resurrected?
