Thanks to you both for the input and information, it's really
helpful.  You're right, I shouldn't be using a really old
version of binutils but what I am doing is providing software
to others (so I might not have control over what version
they have installed).

I think you've answered my question and it looks like this
is the best I can do at the moment.  I will keep an eye
out on newer versions of binutils in case of future
changes.
