Minor version number.  Traditionally, the CVS trunk would get the
version number 2.12.90 after release 2.12 is branched; you'd then
increase it through 2.12.91, 2.12.92 and so on as you made test
releases.  Then eventually it would be time for the next release, so
you'd set the version number to 2.13.0 on the newly-created branch and
2.13.90 on the trunk.  And so on.

David's patch looks OK to me.
