Though in general we've never bothered to try and make debugging work with
code that is relaxed by the linker.
Strictly speaking, that is not quite true. The embedded PIC work for
MIPS ECOFF does preserve debugging information in the presence of
relaxation.
It is of course not conceptually difficult to preserve debugging
information, but it does require some care and attention to detail.
